In 2025, we launched the Greenskeeper Pathway Program with four students at two golf clubs. This year, we’re proud to have grown to 12 students working at eight area golf clubs.
Created in partnership with The Union League and the Super-Scratch Foundation, this agronomy initiative opens doors for teens ages 16 and up to explore careers in golf course management. From the course to a career, students gain hands-on exposure to turf management, landscaping, and equipment technology—while earning certifications and real work experience.
One of this year’s host sites is our own Walnut Lane Golf Club, managed by First Tee – Greater Philadelphia. Three students intern with our grounds crew four days a week each summer, under the direction of Superintendent Joe Alvare. Siblings Temperance and Josiah, alongside fellow First Tee student Dean, spend their days repairing divots, raking and edging bunkers, clearing debris, and pitching in wherever needed.
Sixteen-year-old Josiah arrives at 5 a.m., before the world wakes up, and never tires of watching the sunrise. Off the course, he plays soccer and basketball. His sister Temperance loves working outdoors and getting her hands dirty. Being the only woman on the maintenance team doesn’t faze her—she’s used to being one of few in sports, too. In fact, the program has her considering an agronomy degree in college.
At 16, Dean is motivated by the opportunity to learn about agronomy and landscape maintenance while working outdoors. His favorite part of the job is driving the Sand Pro to maintain the bunkers, along with working alongside his friendly and supportive co-workers.
